Knowledge of Human Development and Learning - The teacher understands how students learn and develop, and provides opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.
Standard two of the Idaho core teacher standards is knowledge of human development. It states that “the teacher understands how students learn and develop, and provides opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development.” The first artifact I included was a list of the ten things I learned in educational psychology that acted as our final. This lists includes the basic functions of a classroom, individualized education program, and Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive object. All are research based ideas about how children develop in the classroom. I placed this in standard two because it deals with the research behind child development and provides information on how to support their personal growth.
The second artifact is a midterm from foundations of schooling. It discusses educational history and theory. It deals with how education has been reformed and changes over time. It covers the strengths and weaknesses of different educational systems and how they can impact the development of children. Standard two plays into this because the development of the child plays into the educational system used to teach them. In order to understand which system to use, I must understand the benefits and weaknesses of the system, as well as my students developmental needs.
The third artifact is a chapter review from my educational psychology class. This chapter covered cognitive development. I though this chapter was very important and really illuminated how students learn and develop. I believe it fits perfectly into standard two because it is scientifically researched ideas about human development and how that research can help a teacher. The way a students learns and develops is very important to know as a teacher and I feel all these artifacts help me understand that process.
