Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs - The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse needs.
Standard three of the Idaho core teacher standards is adapting instruction for Individual needs. This standard states that “ the teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse needs.” The first artifact is a paper about John Dewey. It deals with teaching towards the student and creating quality experiences for them to learn from. Dewey argues that students learn from new experiences that build upon existing or past experiences. In order for a student to learn Dewey feels that a teacher must understand the student's individual schema and create experiences based on this schema. This paper illustrates the importance of standard three and shows understanding of the needs of individual students. The other artifact I included is my poverty paper. This paper talks about how poverty can make it difficult to thrive in school. It is important to understand where students are coming from so you can help them accomplish their goals, both for class, and for their future. These artifacts fits within standard three because they emphasizes the differences in people and that it is important as a teacher understands the student as an individual and respects their diverse cultures.
