In tabular format:
- Total cost $139.53 + $15 shipping. I had a discount at the time via cashrewards.com.au, so total cost would have been $139~
- PCB so it's easy to solder, no need to strip cables for 10 years
- LEDs
- Case is already made so no need to CNC our own one.
- Price difference is $49~, or 50%
- Mini-USB instead of micro-usb. This is important for my usage since I want to use a magnetic connector, and a pre-made faux-leather cable.
Tools: I borrowed a lot of these, so the cost to me was $0.
Board assembly
- Wire Strippers - Get something that can strip CAT-5
- Soldering Iron - Any crappy one will do.
- Solder sucker - Not sure if this is necessary, but I used it once.
- Tweezers - Definitely get these. I tried to YOLO and i couldn't even get the first cable soldered without them
- Side Cutters - Use this for cutting cables
- Hot-Glue gun - Used this for gluing all the things
