G.C. Number stands for "Gas Council" number. During it's period as the sole national distributor of natural gas, British Gas created a council of General, Municipal Boilermakers.
Part of their responsibilities was to log all boilers manufacturered and/or sold within the UK.
A GC Number is made up of 7 different digits set out in this format XX-XXX-XX
The significance of the groups of digits is as follows.
First two digits. 00-000-00
* The first digit specifies the main type of appliances.
* The second digit specifies the type of appliance within the type
Next three digits. 00-000-00
* The next three digits stand for the name of the manufacturer.
Last two digits 00-000-00
* The last two digits cover the model
