Belmont County

This is a list of the veterans residing in Belmont County, Ohio, from the 1890 census who are listed as veterans from West Virginia organizations. They were not necessarily residents of Belmont County when they enlisted during the war, but it is the only compilation available at this time. Names followed by a small "w" indicate that the soldier's widow provided the information. Names with a * indicate a soldier who served in several West Virginia units. The company of the unit precedes the regiment designation, simple numbers indicate "infantry" units.

Belmont County gave hundreds of men to West Virginia units, but no specific numbers are available. A.T. Mckelvey, in his history of the county, stated “...there were hundreds of the patriotic sons on Belmont County that enlisted in the 1st and 2nd Virginia Cavalry and Carlin's Virginia Battery, that were not accredited to Belmont County.” Belmont County men were also enlisting in West Virginia units through 1864. A Wheeling newspaper article credits the town of Martinsville, Belmont County, with providing Co. C, First West Virginia Infantry.

An article in the Belmont Chronicle for Dec. 12, 1861, listed the recent volunteers from Pultney Township, of which the following went to West Virginia units. An addendum to the list in the same issue of the paper added one more name to the list, at the bottom, that of James W. Patterson.
