Gear and Supplies
Your child will need to buy two required pieces of equipment this year: shoes and headgear.
If your child is simply wishing to come out and try wrestling out for a week or so and doesn't want to invest in shoes yet, that is completely understandable. Simply wear some old socks to practice. Make sure they're old socks, because they will get ruined and very dirty. We can't wear tennis shoes on the mat because it causes damage to the mats. The athlete will practice in socks first until they decide they want to join.
We have included links to suggested shoes and headgear at different prices to choose from. You are not required to buy this particular gear, we just thought we'd recommend a few options in case you needed help.
Local stores that sell them are Sports Chalet and Dick's Sporting Goods. Their supply and selection is very limited. I would recommend ordering from the much larger selection found online. Online retailers we recommend are: Amazon, Suplay Sports, or Eastbay.
Shoes:
Adidas Mid-level ($42-85) OR New Colors (These are my personal recommendation for the money. These are the shoes I personally wear and recommend for overall comfort, performance, durability, cost, and style. But to each his own...).
Adidas High-end ($100-120) (These are the custom shoes of BHS graduate and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner)
Headgear:
Cliff Keen $24 (Black)
Brute ($36) (Black and Silver)
Adidas ($33) (Black)
Or you may use the ones provided by the school. We have plenty of headgear: they are functional, but not the prettiest.
Extra accessories, not required:
Kneepads:
Wrestling Bag:
Hair Cover (For hair longer than ear length, rules require it be put up and covered)
Mouthguard: If your child has braces, they MUST have a mouthguard. This particular product is specifically designed for braces.
