Prehistory:
Thousands of years ago a great cataclysm wracked the world of Karildan. The Gods went to war with the Demon Lord Orcus, who wanted to extend his power to the Material Plane and chose as his beachhead the world of Karildan.
A great war ensued and within five years the Demon Prince Orcus had conquered a quarter of the world. The goodly races of Dwarves, Elves, Halflings and Humans banded together and met The Demon’s horde of undead on the great plain and did battle. The battle raged on for many days, until the priests of the goodly races beseached their gods to intervene and help them against the Demon directly.
The Gods sent portends that if they interfered the cost might be higher than the Priests were willing to pay. The Priests accepted the cost without knowing exactly what it would be, believing only it would be their lives that were sacrificed for the good of the world. The Gods chose one of their own to face Orcus in one on one combat. Torag stepped forth; his mighty warhammer raised and charged the Demon Prince.
A mighty battle ensued and with a clash of light, sound and darkness time seemed to stand still. The battled raged and the two beings seemed to expand and become translucent, finally Torag smote Orcus with his warhammer, a telling blow between his horns, and an explosion of power was released across the world.
Continents shifted and rose, oceans were reformed, there was great upheaval and the armies were scattered. When things settled and became calm again nothing was as before. The goodly armies retreated to new areas that seemed familiar and tried to build new homes in what were strange places.

5047 AC (0 NG-reign of the New Gods):
A band of adventurers form. Through trials and tribulations they discover that the universe is still out of balance after the Cataclysm. The Deities of Law and Chaos had forgotten their duties and the universe needed healing. These adventurers eventually managed to find a way to restore the balance and heal reality, but the cost was the destruction of the Major Deities, and they ended up taking their place, the New Gods, stewards of the universe.
2204 NG (7251 AC):
Having recovered from the Ascension of the New Gods, the goodly races are ready to explore the new lands that appeared after the second recorded world Cataclysm. They formed an expedition and settled in the new lands, Creating the City of Clearwater. For the next 300 years, under the direction of the Elves and Dwarves, they concentrated on fortifying their settlement, mining the nearby mountains and farming the plains close to the city. The Humans, eager to expand, were held in check by the longer lived races, who cautioned against attracting attention until they could properly defend themselves.
2496 NG (7543 AC):
The Council of the City of Clearwater agree to send explorers out into the new land, to map the region, locate resources and find out what happened to those who fled the city over the years against the Council's orders.
2516 NG (7563 AC):
Campaign begins.
