Set up digest emails for DTCE mailing list

Are you tired of being inundated with multiple emails from the DTCE mailing list every day?

Good news – it’s possible to set up the system so that you are still given the opportunity to see messages that might be relevant to you, but for those multiple emails to be condensed into one single email that you receive at the end of each day. This is a ‘digest’ of the days activities, through which you can quickly scan subject headings, and if anything piques your interest it is possible to click on messages link to see the full email.

The system that the University uses to administer the email mailing lists is called LISTSERV. It is an old system but it does work rather well for getting information out in a timely way. You may come across other systems that also use the system, such as for JISC for example. All of these systems have a way for their members to adjust what lists they are enrolled on to and how they are to receive emails.

1. Firstly you need to setup a password with Listserv. Go to http://listserv.manchester.ac.uk
2. Click on the link Subscriber’s Corner
3. You are taken to a page in which you are expected to login, but instead find a link near the top of the page “get a new LISTSERV password” and click on this.

2. On the next page you are prompted for your email address (enter the one on which you currently receive the DTCE emails). You are then asked to enter a new password.
3. If this is the first time you have logged into the Listserv system at Manchester, you then have to wait for an email so that you can verify your identity. Otherwise the password change will be automatic.
4. Once you have verified your identity, again return to http://listserv.manchester.ac.uk and choose Subscriber’s Corner. Enter your email address and password and hit Login.
5. Once you get inside the LISTSERV interface you will arrive at the Subscriber’s Corner page. Here you will find a list of the Mailing Lists on which you are currently subscribed.
6. Click on the DTCE-STUDENTS list, and you are then taken to a page where you can adjust how you receive emails from the DTCE Mailing list.

3. It might be worth experimenting with the different settings to find a vehicle of delivery appropriate to your needs and that works well in your chosen email client. But I have found that the Digest (HTML format) works well for me (pictured above). Select this and hit the Update Options button, and log off as required.

Other things to try

• You may find other parts of the system useful, such as the List Archives through which you can go back in time to examine the
• messages that were being sent out (goes back to September 2007).
• You may find a way to subscribe to lists that you did not know existed such as the UoM CHESS-CLUB (go to Online Mailing List Archives instead of Subscriber’s Corner.)
• The link to CataList takes you to a place in which you can search for other external mailing lists that fit your interest.
