I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites sharing of ideas.
As an educator, we should ignite a fire in our students that creates an intrinsic desire for them to learn because of their own curiosity and for their own gain. It is our responsibility to prepare students to be life-long learners and to work collectively with other students as a team. I am a big fan of project-based learning, so many of my assignments involve working as teams to solve real-life problems. The projects in my classroom are constantly changing depending on events happening around us.
This past school year, one of our projects included the evaluation of the rain levels in Montgomery County because we were experiencing so much rain. We researched data on the internet to capture monthly rainfall levels for the past 2 years. By placing the information in spreadsheets, we created some pretty interesting graphical comparisons.
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
