The library is unavailable at the Fraternity Club. Our Gardens magazines are still been sold each quarter of the year.
There are also plant forums and guest speakers. The information provided by members and these speakers has been compiled on these web pages to provide a list of plants, tips, and a gardening year of activities.
The lists of plants are provided with tips and hints on how to grow them in the Illawarra region. They are examples of what various club members have found grows well. Some plants are "sensitive" and require a lot of care and attention. Other plants are tough, drought-tolerant, wind-tolerant or handle the humidity well.
But remember this, there is no such thing as a no-care garden. All gardens require some work!
Most herbs can be grown in amongst your other garden plants. The difference is that they can be used to enhance your cooking, provide aroma in potpourri, deter pests, and still give you flowers.
Be warned though! Not all herbs will stay in one place in your garden. They often self-sow and can turn up in unexpected places. Parsley will happily grow out of cracks in paths and nasturtiums will pop up in another flower bed. Be also aware that some herbs we use in our cooking grow to VERY large trees and shrubs.
The lovely thing about gardening is that you can give anything a try at least once. It is possible to grow frost tender plants in cold areas if you have a protected spot. Every garden is a micro-climate that has challenges and rewards. It also has heartbreaks and disappointments - however - don't be afraid to give something a go!
And if you like to consider a garden in medieval times it also was used to express hidden meanings and stories.
Happy gardening!
