I was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and grew up about 40 miles away in Mathias, West Virginia. I attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and received a BA in Economics with a minor in French. Also, I participated in varsity cross-country and track, improved significantly from my high school days, and became an Academic All-American during my senior year in 2003. The following year I worked at the United States Census Bureau as a Survey Statistician in the Washington, DC area. In 2006, I received an MS in Economics after two years at the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, TX. Most members of my family, except for my paternal grandfather's family (i.e. the Garretts), are from Texas, and it is a big family tradition to attend UT-Austin.Â
