While the winter months are often seen as the "off season" for the spotter, winter weather poses an equally significant threat to life and property. Winter weather criteria can be reported using social media.
Gathering a snowfall report can be very simple as all you need is a piece of plywood and a yardstick.
The plywood (snowboard) should be at least 2' x 2' and 3/8" to 1/2" in thickness. This will be placed somewhere on your lawn away from trees or buildings and in a place where drifting is not an issue. You may want to mark where you place your snowboard with small flags or some other type of marker that will stick out above accumulated snowfall so you may find your board easily.
The yardstick. Purchase one of these at any local hardware and you will have the basic tools you need to gather your information for your snowfall report.
If you wish to get a little fancier...
You can buy a rain/snow gauge (pictured below). You can find these available for purchase online between $30 to $40.This will assist you in not only getting your snowfall measurement, but will enable you to produce a liquid equivalent reading (the amount of water in a snowfall).
