Our local Charities

On this page, we list in no particular order, the charities that we serve currently and those we have donated to in the past.

Just a little information is provided, with links to their own web pages.

Chrysalis House

Chrysalis House is a shelter in Kanata, Ottawa, for abused women and their children. They would love to receive slippers, sweaters ,hats, mitts and scarves. Blankets are always nice as well.

Harmony House

Harmony House is the only second stage shelter in Ottawa, serving women and their children who are survivors of violence.  They provide a transitional period from crisis shelter services to independent living for up to one year, with group and individual support.  They need all kinds of knitted and crocheted goods.

Britannia Woods Community House

Britannia Woods Community House has been in operation for the past 30 years, and now offers many supports for the disadvantaged multicultural families on fixed or low incomes who live in Ottawa Community Housing in the Britannia Woods area.  The Community House includes an emergency food pantry, and a wide range of programs for families, troubled children and youth.  64% of the community are under the age of 20. They need all sorts of knitted and crocheted goods.

Michele Heights Community House

Community Houses are hubs and programming spaces found in several distinct communities with the Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre  catchment area. They are open to the residents of the community they are located in. They provide resources and supports, build community capacity, help to identify the needs of the community and offer a warm and welcoming environment. 

Foster Farm Family House

Located in the West end of Ottawa, Foster Farm Family House supports residents of this large neighborhood of Ottawa Social Housing with a wide variety of programs and services.  These include a food bank and programs for children and adults, such as supporting families who have moved from shelter care, a literacy program, computer use, after school care and camps, Somali support, and referrals for food, furniture and clothing.

Nelson House

Nelson House exists to provide safety for women and children who are being abused and to work with other groups and individuals toward ending violence against all women. It is situated in Nepean.  Nelson House said they would be pleased to receive sweaters for women and children, baby blankets, hats, mitts, scarves and slippers. "Many of our clients arrive with nothing and are grateful for the warmth of a hand knit item".

Youville Centre

Helps young single mothers provide a brighter future for themselves and their children. "This donation of hand-knitted items would have a great impact by providing much needed warm clothing and baby blankets for the young mothers and their children that we serve here at Youville Centre... Being able to wrap their baby in a warm blanket and not have to worry about scarves and hats this winter would be a great help to our young mothers as they continue to strive to become more self-sufficient members of society. Knitted goods are needed for toddlers in particular, up to the age of 3 years".

Elizabeth Fry Society

We support Norwood House, which is a 15 bed transitional home for women and their children.  Their needs are varied.

Cornerstone Housing for Women

The Cornerstone mission statement says "Cornerstone provides emergency shelter and supportive housing for a diversity of women.  Our services are offered in an environment which promotes dignity and a sense of hope".   We have made women's mitts, hats, scarves and sweaters for Cornerstone.

Debra Dynes Family House

The Debra Dynes Family House is a multiservice community resource in a low-income social housing area. Over 150 people per day from a wide geographic area access their programs and services.  "We need mitts and scarves, and cotton dish cloths... we would appreciate blankets and stroller blankets and baby jackets/cardigans. We try to keep some slippers on hand for children and adults. We would be happy with anything that can be provided. We have found that our families are very grateful for items so that our babies have supplies and our children and youth are warm and well protected in the fall and winter."

Lanark County Interval House

As the only shelter and dedicated support service in Lanark County for victims of woman abuse, LCIH offers not only a 24-hour Help Line and Emergency Shelter but also extensive Outreach Programs for women and children.  They need all kinds of knitted and crocheted items.

Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre 

The Bethany Hope Centre exists to improve the well-being of pregnant youth and young-parent families.

Caldwell Family Centre 

The Caldwell Family Centre plays a critical role in supporting residents of Ottawa who are impacted by poverty. In collaboration with partners, we strive to meet clients’ needs in a wide variety of areas, including food security, social engagement, child and youth programming and vocational support.

The Ottawa Mission

"The Ottawa Mission is non-profit, and faith-based, meeting the needs of the homeless and those at risk of being homeless in the Ottawa region. Established in 1906 on the foundation of food, clothing and shelter, the demand for the Ottawa Mission's services has increased dramatically in recent years".  We provide knitted or crocheted lap blankets for the hospice patients.

Seniors Residences and Long Term Care Homes

need afghans, lap blankets, bed jackets and shawls, twiddlemuffs, and knittedTtwiddle Balls as well as Walkie Pockies. Operation Come Home 

works with street-involved youth in Ottawa and across the country to help them reach their highest potential. We provide mitts, hats, scarves and socks. 

The Kanata Food Cupboard

The Kanata Food Cupboard is a non-profit agency that provides service to self-identifying individuals who live in the Kanata area and require emergency food.  They happily accept all kinds of knitted and crocheted work from us for their Christmas Hamper Program.

The Young Women's Emergency Shelter

 has asked us for hats mitts and scarves, especially Infinity scarves, for young women aged 16-21 years.

City of Ottawa project 

to provide scarves and other knitted winter items for newcomers to Canada.

Queensway Carleton Hospital 

The ACE unit and their Seniors unit needs twiddlemuffs, shawls, and lap blankets.  The twiddlemuffs give elderly patients suffering with dementia or delirium something to do with their hands to provide some stress relief.  They are simple to make, and use up odds and ends of yarn.  Pattern is available through WCCKnitters.

Items donated to the Civic and Riverside campuses.

Buns in the Oven

is for Ottawa young parents and has "a mission to provide accessible, integrated and flexible services and advocacy to pregnant and parenting youth and their children, so that they may be supported in their efforts to live in a healthy family and community environment".  They need baby clothing and blankets.

Charles H. Pulse Public School and Castlefrank Elementary School 

have requested hats and mittens for young students.

Savvy Seconds

Savvy Seconds is a free clothing venue for the whole family.

West Carleton Disaster Relief (Tornado Response) 

was provided with winter items after the 2018 tornado in the Dunrobin area.

Arnprior and District Food Bank (Snowsuit Fund) 

was provided with winter-wear items for all ages.

The Snowsuit Fund of Ottawa 

was provided with winter-wear items for children.

Centretown Community Health Centre 

is a nonprofit, multi-service Community Health Centre that plays an active role in the Centretown community since 1969.

Kanata Hospice 

We provide knitted/crocheted Teddy Bear sweater(s) for the Bears that they sell as a fundraiser during the "Home for the Holiday" event.

Kanata Senior's Centre

Christmas Box Program

Carp Co-operative Nursery School

We provided donations to support a fund raiser.

West Carleton Medical Centre (Carp)

Between 2012 and 2017 we donated a child's knitted outfit, a large afghan, a Homemade Quilt and a Knitted Baby Set, 2 afghans and a baby blanket to the West Carleton Medical Centre in Carp, which has raised a total of $590 for their X-ray dept.

Goulbourn Museum

The museum has a display of poppies for Remembrance Day Events. (see picture below)
