If you have newer hardware and a modern Operating system with 64+ gigs of ram, you may have problems getting VTMB to work on your system. The last release of Compmod was built on top of Wesp's 5.6 Unofficial Patch, which included a number of bug fixes and some updated .dlls to deal with memory issues caused by the older game engine. But that was also quite some time ago when computers generally had at most 16 GB of RAM. So if you find the game doesn't run before and/or after installing this mod, you may want to consider installing Wesp's latest unofficial patch as it may contain some engine enhancement goodness.
1) Uninstall/Reinstall VTMB : You need a CLEAN COPY of VTMB with no mods or unofficial patches. The other instructions also emphasis this point. The main thing here is when you uninstall, that you make sure the game directory is actually gone. When you have installed unofficial patches or other mods, sometimes the game directory is not completely removed. Backing up the directory by renaming as described in the General instructions is Okay.
2) Download the latest Unofficial Patch from Wesp : http://www.moddb.com/mods/vtmb-unofficial-patch or https://www.nexusmods.com/vampirebloodlines/mods/80
3) Install it: Unfortunately, he only offers an executable installer. Which is why we did a sacrificial clean installation.
4) After completing the install of the Unofficial Patch, start the game and confirm it works. Once you confirm the game is running, exit out.
5) Extract CompMod 1.0 to a Temporary Folder on your Desktop. IE: Desktop\Compmod
6) Extract CompMod 1.4 Patcher to the same Temporary Directory and clobber files. IE : Desktop\Compmod
7) Copy over the following files from the Patched VTMB game directory:
...\vampire the masquerade - bloodlines\Vampire\bin\* -> Desktop\Compmod\bin\
8) Uninstall/Reinstall VTMB to reset the game to an unpatched state (As the content updates will likely cause conflicts). Note: this is an excellent time to make a backup copy of the game instead of actually deleting by simply renaming the directory as described in the General section and following the uninstall + re-install process.
9) Copy the CONTENTS of Desktop\Compmod
Enter the directory
Highlight everything (CTRL + A or drag a box around everything with your mouse)
CTRL + C to Copy or Right click the selected items and select Copy
10) Find your VTMB directory:
Retail\Digital Distribution CD installation folder: (32 bit OS)
C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Retail\Digital Distribution CD installation folder: (64 bit OS)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Steam installation folder: (32 bit OS)
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Steam installation folder: (64 bit OS)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
11) Paste the extracted + patched files. You should be prompted to overwrite files. Select Replace All.
Good Luck and have fun! Dheu
