Trio 13 Gathering

Global Citizenship for Sustainable Development

Saturday 11 June 2016, 10am—noon

Background and Content

Global citizenship is both a concept and a growing commitment emphasizing our common identity and responsibility as humans. Kelly just attended the UN DPI/NGO Conference in Korea on the topic of Education for Global Citizenship. Attended by over 2500 people, this two and a half day gathering included five plenary roundtables and over 40 workshops looking at the importance of SDG 4 on education for achieving the SDGs and in particular the importance of educating for global citizenship.

When we meet: We'll start with a short overview of the conference including three conference handouts and three short videos of conference presentations. (Example: Conference Wrap Up)

We’ll discuss:

-- the UNESCO definition of global citizenship education (below)

--how our interests and involvements help foster the development of global citizens

--any concerns and ideas for making global citizenship more of a reality

--relating recent events to global citizenship and vice versa (e.g., UN World Humanitarian Summit, WHO World Health Assembly, International Labor Organization conference, etc.)

Pulling it all together will be the outcome document from the Conference, the Action Plan: Education for Global Citizenship. Please read this three-page doc in advance as we will also be discussing it together.

UNESCO's definition of education for global citizenship: "to empower learners to assume active roles to face and resolve global challenges and to become proactive contributors to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, and secure world."

Some handouts included:

--DPI/NGO Conference Program(it included plenaries, five plenary roundtables and over 40 workshops)

--Gyeongju Action Plan: Education for Global Citizenship (conference outcome document)

--Four quotes: Global Citizenship, Global Citizenship Education, Human Rights

--SDG 4: Education

Comments from Participants

Two of the main emphases that emerged in the group (and my take-aways) was affirming the value/need for global citizens (common human identity/responsibility) and being aware of the underlying power structures that maintain inequities and which are not usually identified or addressed. I do not buy an uncritical embracing of anything related to making humanity better as long as root causes remain rooted in obscurity. Kelly
