How do I join?
Sign up for our listserv and attend our next interest meeting! If you'd like to join mid-semester, just fill out the listserv sign-up, and we'll follow up via email.
Do I need to audition to join?
Absolutely not! All voices are welcome!
Do I need any previous experience working with senior citizens?
Not at all! We strive to bridge the generational gap by creating opportunities for students from all backgrounds and experience levels to form intergenerational connections with the residents. New-comers and experienced volunteers alike are welcome!
What is the difference between a Volunteer and Vocalist?
Vocalists rehearse together and sing for the residents, while volunteers visit with the residents and engage in our philanthropy and outreach. Instrumentalists are encouraged to join as volunteers. Whatever your interests, we have a place for you to become a voice for the elderly population and spread joy, one vintage song at a time!
When and where do we rehearse and perform?
We rehearse Tuesdays from 7-8:15pm on campus (location is announced through our listserv). We perform about once a month at local senior living communities, and carpool to these performances.
What kind of music do we sing?
From Sinatra to Glenn Miller, from the Jackson 5 to the Beatles, we strive to create feelings of nostalgia for our audience, and encourage them to sing along. Our music repertiore consists of "oldies" music, typically from the 1940s through 1970s. Performance themes include standards, sock hops, Broadway musicals, TV theme songs, holiday tunes, patriotic tunes, and more! Worried you won't know the music? Learning it together is part of the fun!
How do we select songs?
Songs are added to our repertoire based on suggestions from residents, caregivers, and club members. Each semester, our executive board members make a preliminary list based on these song suggestions, and then club members vote on a song list for each performance.
In addition to singing, what other opportunities are offered?
From music to service to leadership, Vintage Voices offers a wide array of opportunities for our members. In addition to our weekly rehearsals and monthly performances, we offer on-campus performance opportunities as well as solos. Interacting with residents before and after performances provides invaluable experience working with this population and learning from all their wisdom. Membership also offers fundraising and public speaking opportunities, as well as leadership and professional growth opportunities through joining our executive board.
