Vintage Voices at UMD is a student organization at the University of Maryland that improves quality of life through music and gives a voice to senior citizens. Our purpose is to brighten senior citizens' days and touch their hearts through rejuvenating nostalgic music and through bridging the generational gap. We strive to relieve the stress associated with both physical and cognitive ailments while also providing a creative outlet for students to relieve stress and enjoy music.
With the vastly increasing aging population and society's increasing need for residential senior care, long-term care communities are becoming more crowded and have less time to give quality care that focuses on the residents' mental health and quality of life as well as physical health.
Our three-fold approach involves service, philanthropy, and advocacy. Our service includes regular sing-along performances of nostalgic music at senior care communities, and visits with the residents after performances to build intergenerational connections. Our philanthropy involves donating music equipment to these communities to create a long-term, positive impact, even after we perform. Our advocacy involves giving the aging population a voice on our college campus to reduce the negative stigma associated with aging and create positive perceptions of the elderly population in the next generation of professionals.
