Lets make order in the VAT World - Olav Skille
As one of the pioneers in discovering Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) – over thirty years ago, I have mixed feelings towards what is going on in the field nowadays. From one end , many therapists have heard of VAT and many are using it as a part of their therapeutic tools. This is true not only in alternative clinics but also by physical therapists, and medical doctors- mainly in Europe. However, there is a lot of confusion and mix of concepts and views.
You may have heard of VibroAcoustic in binaural entrainment, you hear it with VAM – Vibroacoustic Music, and you feel it with frequencies between 30 and 120 Hz when you use Low Frequency Sound Massage equipment
Researchers may argue about which frequency range that should be used in VibroAcoustic Therapy. (I call it VAT), and I have defined the range to be 2 octaves: 30 – 120 Hz..
Since it was I who first defined the limitations of this range to be called VAT, I would be happy to tell you the basic principles of VibroAcoustic Therpay.
As I see it, VAT can be used in any sound emitting furniture powered by amplifiers, The term Vibroacoustic Therapy should be limited ONLY when frequencies in the range of 30 Hz to 120 Hz are used. Vibroacoustic Music can be used as a term when music is mixed with frequencies in this area.
Music used in sound furniture should be named Musical Sound Massage.
If we stick to these guidelines, we avoid confusion about which stimuli we are using.
NB: in any case we must define which frequencies we use. This is the only way we can compare effects and improve the software we are using. We are far from finding the optimal approaches,
I would be happy to hear suggestions, different views and most important, feedback from therapists and clients of the effective usage of VAT for different purposes.
kind regards,
