Venice, known for its millions of tourist that come each year, has problems of managing tourism when the city gets overcrowded. Just like Venice, there are other heritage cities like Florence and Amsterdam have problems with tourism.
The University of Venice International Center of Studies on the Tourism Economy (CISET) have been studying tourism in heritage cities since 1990 and have surveyed these heritage cities. The organization found out that culture was the main motive for tourists to visit these cities. Unfortunately, due to the high number of visitors, the congestion and the parking problems has been determined as the principal negative effect for the local society. Other negative effects include more vandalism, crime, and pollution as well as less available parking spaces. This resulted in the organization to find out the best ways to manage tourism in these cities.

Tourists in Amsterdam
The two main areas that cities should be doing to manage tourism according the organization are controlling the flow of traffic and the flow of tourists into the cities especially tourists who are only there for the day. These cities have to implement strict policies about tourism management not only to reduce the negative effects, but also to make tourism compatible with the needs of local societies.
