In order to make a better decision when choosing an out-of-ground farming system to implement in Venice, our team travelled to local area businesses in Worcester, MA to get input from individuals with experience.
The first business we visited, Green Zone Hydroponics, is a local supplier of hydroponic systems and related products. Team members Kevin O'Driscoll and Rachel Manca spoke with a representative, Ken, who was happy to share with us his experience in owning and operating hydroponic systems. Ken provided several suggestions in horizontal systems that might be able to be modified for vertical use and gave great information regarding systems that produce a higher yield or are the simplest to use. To conclude our meeting, Ken referred us to another local business, My Choice Greens, that had a full scale hydroponics operation going on and would be willing to show us what they were working on.
Our second visit took us to Let's Grow Hydroponics, where Kevin and Rachel met with a representative named Farhad. Farhad spoke to us about drip systems and why these are beneficial for first time hydroponic growers and the importance of monitoring pH levels in the water that is being used for growing, something we had only lightly considered.
Our team's final visit was to My Choice Greens, where Kevin met with representative Kay Varl to discuss how My Choice Greens uses ZipGrow hydroponic systems to run their hydroponic farming business. Having worked closely with hydroponic technologies for some time, Kay offered professional insight to the proper nutrients to give plants in order to get specific produce results along with tips for nursing plants, pros and cons to the ZipGrow system they were using, and other critical things to watch out for when implementing a system for the first time. Kay also offered key advice to consider when looking to implement robotics into a farming system: plan for the robotic systems from the very start in order to leave enough physical space to implement them!
