For our last two interviews, we visited Orsoni, a glass mosaic maker, and stopped by Consorzio Promovetro Murano, a consortium that represents glass manufacturers on Murano.
Orsoni is a small company that makes mosaics for individuals, churches, and reconstructive projects. Although their product is expensive and belongs to a niche market, the tradition that the company holds means a lot to its customers. They have special permission from the city to remain in their current location, and frequently need to get special permission to drive large boats down the small canals near the factory. This tradition is important to the company, and they value the fact that they are permitted to stay here.
Consorzio Promovetro Murano is a consortium that represents 47 glass production companies on the island of Murano. The consortium offers a trademark sticker that guarantees the glass product is made on the island. While the sticker isn't a measure of quality, it is a legal trademark that places the geographic location of the glass on Murano. This adds value to the product, as it is marked 100% authentic. The consortium also provides the wholesale sale of raw materials. Though many glass companies have their own methods for managing logistics, the consortium likes to be available to provide assistance when needed or required. We believe that offering such a sticker to other products in Venice would increase their value and help grow the city's production industry.
