Virtual FlyLab
So I've found a new website that will allow us to complete this lab. I'm still trying to figure it out, but if you follow these directions, you shouldn't have any problems. You may work in pairs with a laptop, but both must fill out their Virtual FlyLab packet.
- Click on this link: Classical Genetics Simulator, then click "Launch CGS". If it asks about Adobe Flash Player, click "Download Flash", then "Allow", then the link that says, click "here after Flash is enabled."
- Select Study a Practice Population. Go through Practice Populations 1 through 3. On the backside of your Virtual FlyLab Packet or a clean sheet of paper, explain why Practice Populations 1 and 2 demonstrate autosomal inheritence (chromosomes 1-22), and why Practice Population demonstrates sex-linked inheritence (X & Y chromosomes).
- Select Create your own Drosophila Population.
- For each Problem (A, B, & C) in your packet you will select the genotype on the chromosome, and then select "Continue".
- Problem A: Female with Wild Eyes & Male with Sepia Eyes
- Problem B: Female with Wild Eyes/Vestigial Wings & Male with Sepia Eyes/Wild Wings
- Problem C: Female with White Eyes & Male with Wild Eyes (this is listed wrong in the packet)
- For each Problem you will find flies that match the listed phenotype and cross them. Use the "Sort by" menu to quickly identify the features you are looking for.
- Click on the Analysis Tab to see a list form of the cross you've performed.
- You may perform a Chi Square statistical analysis using the Stats Tab, but to recieve full credit, you have to show your work for calculating the Chi Square, which this doesn't give to you. It's just handy for checking your work.
