Critic and The Judge: How We Can Embrace Criticism and Learn to Love Our Work
If criticism isn’t the biggest buzzkill to making a lot of work consistently, I don’t know what is. Everybody’s got a critic – whether it’s someone they know, or a voice that comes from deep inside. Learn to silence that negative voice and even turn it into a source of inspiration. This lecture is especially valuable as a group discussion, whether your group is six people or sixty.
April 6th Meeting 2021
Our April 6th General Meeting is a celebration of us! While we don’t have a paid speaker, we do have a special short presentation by one of our own…we’re keeping that a surprise. Then we turn our spotlight onto you, our members. This month we’re featuring:
1. Show us your Mini-Challenge #3! Even if you haven’t finished, share with all of us your inspiration and your creation. Remember, sometimes we don’t need to finish to have enjoyed and learned.
2. Knit and Crochet Washcloth Challenge
3. Art Quilt Pass the Envelope Reveal
4. Art Quilt Color Wheel Challenge
5. WAGS Fashion Parade
6. Traditional Show and Tell. As always, this category can include not just your textile passions, but your gardening, cooking, etc.
March 2nd Meeting 2021
Mary Pal from Ontario describes what you can look forward to in her presentation.
Just how did I come to use cheesecloth as an art medium? Join me on the rollicking adventure of the whole "cheesecloth" story - where it started, how it developed, the surprising places it has taken me - and how you might forge your own similar path, if you are so inclined - and bumps to avoid along the way! This is a fun zoom class with interaction from the audience.
February 2nd Meeting 2021
We will have a presentation from Kathryn Pellman. She is an artist, fashionista, quilter, cook, baker, gardener and storyteller. Her whimsical quilts combine ashion and quilting along with her passions and are a celebration and exploration of women and femininity. Kathryn was featured on three segments of Quilting Arts TV in 2019 and is the subject of Quilting the Odd & Unusual feature in the Spring 2019 Issue of Art Quilting Studio. Lots of great Presentations on the horizon you won't want to miss! So, tell your friends, and have them THEN- for February- we will have a presentation from Kathryn Pellman.
January 5th Meeting 2021.
Celeste Chalasani - From Silkworm to Sari: Sericulture in India. In this lecture, Celeste will explore the process of producing silk in India. She will share photos from Southern India to first show how the silk cocoons are sorted and the various processes involved with reeling the silk to produce a silk thread suitable for weaving. You’ll watch weavers in the village of Mangalageeri, Andhra Pradesh operate a hand loom. Celeste will conclude the lecture with photos of saris she owns from different regions of India. Celeste is a National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) certified teacher and teaches for both Craftsy and the Embroider’s Guide of America (EGA).
December 1st Meeting 2020.
We will have a fashion show from WAGS (Wearable Art Group) of their latest and best creations over the years.
This will be followed by the revelation of the Art Quilters latest project - "The Brown Bag Embellishment Round Robin" that was actually finished in record time!
We will then witness the newest creations from our latest sub-group-"The New Knit and Crochet - Favorite Things."
After that, we will see the results of the Mini Challenge : "who- did- what" .
We will also get a sneak peek at "The Traditions and Recipes" that many of our members have graciously shared. This will be available to all members on our website.
And last, but not least!... our traditional Show & Tell!
November 3rd 2020.
Join Patricia Belyea as she takes you on a virtual tour of the Tokyo Quilt Festival. Then get swept away to a chusen-dyeing workshop where you watch the elaborate hand-dyeing process. Patricia finishes with a trunk show of her quilts made with Japanese cottons and talks about how the fabrics inspired her quilt compositions.
We will have 2 "Show and Tells":
October - November "Mini Challenge" - "And now for something completely different". Members show photos of their progress.
"Traditional" - Members show photos and describe their current work.
October 6th 2020.
Our speakers will be Erin Moody and Christy Baty of Relics In Situ (https://www.relicsinsitu.com). Their topic will be “In the Collection at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University”. The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and home to a collection of over 12 million items. They will explore some gorgeous needlework and discuss the historical significance of these books, including their connection to the Tudors.
We will have 2 "Show and Tells" :
August- September "Zentangle" challenge" - members showed photos of their results.
"Traditional" - Members show photos and describe their current work. We will also introduce a new October - November Challenge.
September 1st 2020.
Fiber Artist Laura Smith (web site: http://www.stitch4fun.com/index.html) presented a fascinating program on the "Seven Ways of Color Contrast". She talked about the most important aspects of color and included examples of her work to help illustrate her comments.
We had 2 "Show and Tells" :

August 4th 2020 Zoom Meeting.
We opened the meeting with a 5 minute Breakout Session to enable members to introduce themselves and get to know each other.
This was followed by a quick update of what is happening in VSG.
We then introduced our first 2 month MINI challenge based on ZENTANGLES.
We had 2 "Show and Tells" :
"Then and Now" - members showed their earliest work and then their latest piece.
"Traditional" - Member showed photos of what they are currently working on.
July 7th 2020 Zoom Meeting.
This was our first Zoom Meeting of the new year.
The new President (Linda Casey) thanked the previous board for their hard work and introduced the new board.
She discussed the Zoom Etiquette and then we announced the change in Little Shop. We took a poll as to wether people wanted to continue with Little Shop.
We showed photos of work done for the 2019 2020 challenge called New Beginnings.
This was followed by a presentation by the mini Art Group - Pass the envelope.
We ended the meeting with our traditional Show and Tell.
