Décrire un document iconographique

1. Identifier sa nature.

• A photograph / A photo / A snapshot

• A drawing

• An engraving

• A cartoon

• A comic strip

• An advertisement / An advert / An ad

• A poster

• A map

2. Identifier son origine.

• It dates from ...

• It comes from ... / It is an extract from ...

• It is an advertisement for ...

• ... published in ( + name of newspaper / magazine ) on + date complète ...

• It was drawn by ... / painted by ... / taken by ... / made by ...→ ... a painter / a photographer / a cartoonist / an advertiser etc...

3. Décrire le document.

Commencez toujours par décrire ce qui est le plus évident, et répondez aux Wh- questions ( Who / When / What / Where ). Dites brièvement de quoi il s'agit. Vous donnerez davantage de détails plus tard.

a. La composition.

• It is composed of ... / It is made up of ...

• There is a ... title / slogan / text / photograph / drawing / cartoon / chart/ map / caption / bubble = speech balloon

• It shows ... / It represents ... / in this photo, we can see ...

b. La Localisation des Choses et des Personnages.

• The scene takes place in ...

• At the top of the page ( En haut ) / at the bottom of the page ( En bas ).

• In the foreground ( Premier plan ) / in the background ( Arrière plan / Second plan ), we can see...

• In the top right-hand corner/ In the top left-hand corner ( En haut à droite / En haut à gauche ).

• On the right, on the left... there is ...

• In the middle

• Between ( Entre ) / Behind ( Derrière ) / In front of ( Devant ) / On the right ( A droite ) / On the left ( A gauche ) / Above ( Au-dessus ) / Under ( Au-dessous ) / opposite ( En face ) / next to (à côté de) etc...

c. Description détaillée

Décrivez le document : les couleurs, les formes, les contrastes …

4. Analyse du document.

Imaginez les sentiments des personnages.

Imaginez ce qu'il s'est passé avant et ce qu'il va se passer ensuite.

Expliquez ce que l'auteur a voulu exprimer grâce à ce document.

The goal of the document is to …

The document aims at … + V-ing

Ex : denounce, convince, sell a product, ask for donations, make people aware of something, make fun of something …

5. Opinion personnelle

Donnez votre avis : comment trouvez vous ce document ? (funny, interesting, surprising, convincing, ridiculous …)

Etes vous d'accord ou non avec l'auteur? Qu'avez vous à dire sur le sujet? Pouvez vous relier ce document à un thème voisin?
