1967-68 Westpac, February 4th, 1968, courtesy of LT Tom Lettington, Operations Officer

On February 4th, 1968 we were on a NGFS mission off the coast of North Vietnam and were taken under fire by a shore battery.

DVD was made from an 8mm film shot by the DESDIV 152 Operations Officer that shows counter battery fall stern and off our

starboard beam, with Captain Fontaine in Command and Commodore Nivison on the bridge.

HOEL suffered some topside shrapnel damage and our stern whip antenna was shot away.

We suffered no direct hits and there were no personnel casualties.

Counter battery starts at about 3:00 Min, back in the ship's smoke trail, hard to see.

A close counter battery received at 3:20 Min.

Shrapnel damage to Tartar launcher is shown at 3:48 Min.

The other ship seen in the video was the USS Bordelon DD-881.
