The Journey
The journey for escaping slaves was extremely dangerous, even with all of the help of important and influential people. Whether it was being tracked by dogs, surviving on the run, or overcoming injuries, the risks a slave took to escape were immense.
One of the most important things that played into the slaves favor was having a predetermined route to take to get to the North. For the escaping slaves, escaping to the North was not as easy as stopping at a gas station, grabbing a map, and heading down the right roads. There were no maps of the Underground Railroad route and most slaves knew little about the land outside the plantation that they had grown up on.
Due to these factors, most slaves went from safe house to safe house along the Underground Railroad until they made it to their destination.
For this section of your presentation, choose a slave state from which slaves escaped. Also, pick a destination to which slaves escaped to freedom. Research the route that slaves used to get from point A to point B.
Create a map to show the route you researched. Be sure to identify any famous Underground Railroad sites a slave using that route may have stopped at.
Identify any hazards slaves would have encountered along the way (for example travelling close to Southern cities, relying on railroads, etc.).
