Ectopic Rule-Out Algorithm

Received a call from the ED requesting a sonographer to be called in for an ectopic rule-out?

Is it a Call Shift (Night/Weekend)? 

    No: They should call the US techs at 584-1646

    Yes: Proceed

While on the phone with the ED, ask them:

• What's the beta-HCG?            

• What did the ED bedside US show? 

  • Images available in QPathe (uses PACS login)

  • Images may but do not have to be reviewed by radiology attending/resident

• Has OB been consulted and seen the patient? 

  • What were the recommendations?

  • OB attending required at UCMC.

  • OB does not have to be involved at WCH.

• Never commit to calling in the tech on the first call.

  • Ask who the ED attending is and the best way to reach her/him if necessary. 

  • Resident can call in the tech for straightforward cases. 

  • Any case that is not straightforward needs to be reviewed by the radiology attending for approval.

If appropriate, call in the on-call technologist.

If the on-call technologist does not answer:

• leave a voicemail and call again in 15 minutes.

• If the 2nd call is unsuccessful, call the Lead Technologist (Deana).
