Iot-RESA: An Internet of Things based Resilient, Efficient, and Safe Agriculture Ecosystem
Project Duration: 2017 - 2018 (£300K)
We aim to design an IoT-based solution (IoT-RESA) in order to establish a sustainable agricultural ecosystem by using: 1) IoT including sensor and wearable devices, wireless communications (i.e., wireless sensor networks (WSNs), device-to-device (D2D) communications, machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, mobile cellular network (MCN), etc.), and networking technologies; and 2) agriculture (i.e., biochemistry, plant, and environment technologies). This cross-disciplinary approach will introduce the IoT-RESA with emphasis on i) reliable D2D and M2M communications in WSNs and MCN, to monitor the ambient environments (temperature, humidity, humidity, weather, leaf wetness, etc.) and apply statistical methods to exactly predict the appearance of potential risks; ii) efficient antennas design for sensor and wearable devices for low transmission energy consumption and efficient sensing technologies based on agricultural knowledge of resources (i.e., soil, water, fertilizer, plant, etc.), so as to increase the productivity with low cost; and iii) early individual (using wearable and mobile devices) and public (using a web-portal) alarms to ensure “safety first” for farmers and energy efficiency (energy saving and energy harvesting techniques applied to the whole IoT-RESA) for green environment.
