Syllabus from Math department.
Textbook: Introduction to Probability by D. P. Bertsekas and John N. Tsitsiklis, 2nd edition.
Supplementary problems: chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3
Tentative schedule (subject to change): (you may need to zoom out the page to see the table)
Announcement:
-1/5: No office hour this week since I'm attending a conference from Tue-Thu. A person will sub for me on Wednesday.
-1/11: Hw2 and Hw3 are posted.
-1/12: Problem 27 in the book is omitted since it is the same as problem 17 in the supplementary.
-1/19: Advice: For each problem, you should be able to write down the sample space and the probability law.
-1/20: office hour for today (only) is changed from 4-5 to 3:30-4 and 5-6.
-1/23: please read the Policy page before the exam.
-2/1: Due to personal reasons, my office-hour this week is
Monday 4-5 (no change)
Tuesday 1-2
Wednesday 5-6
-2/5: The definition of variance we learn in this class is different from sample variance in statistic, see here or here. Questions? Ask me.
-2/5: Problem 27 (book, ch1) and Problem 6 (book, ch2) are related to a beautiful concept in probability, which is called coupling technique. See more example in wiki, or the third page of this. You may see this concept again in Math 171.
-2/8: Please omit problem 9c,d) in the supplementary. In the case you are curious about the answer of 9d), it is 6.8122 approximately.
-2/12: hw 6 is due on 2/22 (the midterm 2 date)
My office-hour next week (2/16-2/19) is:
Tuesday, 2/16: 11am - 1pm
Wed, 2/17: 4pm-5pm
-2/17: some of you might be having several midterms next week. So hw7 is due on Monday, 2/29.
-2/19: formula sheet for midterm 2.
-3/11: formula sheet for final is attached below.
-3/21: Two students have A+. Only one student solved problem 4c correctly.
Two students solved problem 10b) correctly.
