Woodrow Blevins

1906-1980

"Woodie's father John was a banjo player, and his other borhter Gold (1904-1981) is still a good fiddler. Wood began playing the piano without his father's knowldge when he was about 7; the piano was for the girls to play, not the boys. Although he taught himself to read music, he did not learn fiddle tunes from books; they were mostly picked up from the Caudills, Charlie Higgins, or his father. Chalie Higgins especially like to hear Wood play 'Fisher's Hornpipe' - which he played in G# on the piano." - Old Originals booklet

"Best player on the piano I've ever heard. Wood could just pick it up and he could knock it right off. Any kind of fellah that could play the fiddle or banjo could play with him. He had the key, and he'd follow you. He'd get the shirtsleeves rolled up and flopping down, collar unbuttoned, and was SOMETHING to hear!" - qtd. from Worth Edwards in Donleavy.
