Alleghany's other great bluegrass fiddler Tim Smith was a Bluegrass Cardinal for several years, and he's recorded with a large number of bluegrass bands since then, too large a number to start listing. He has a studio in his home. When a band sends him a tape wanting him to put in the fiddle track, he does it at home. Home now is Kernersville where he lived working at Piedmont Airlines. Tim's mother and father moved to Maryland when they were young and Tim was born there. They returned to Alleghany when Tim was 13 and had learned classical violin in school. His mother's father Kilby Reeves taught Tim the ways of mountain fiddling. Through Tim's teen years he played fiddle with Fred Roupe's band Swampgrass. Then he recorded several LPs with LW Lambert's band, The Blue River Boys, and played at Windsors Crossroad several years. Then he started appearing on Grand Ole Opry and since then has made a large number of recordings. Tim never sought to be a star. He's only slightly known outside the world of bluegrass musicians. In that world, however, he's very well respected.
