有一顆蛋在地上滾,滾過樹林,滾過花園,最後滾進一個鴨巢裡。鴨媽媽沒發現這顆蛋特別大,繼續孵蛋。
有一天,蛋破了,前三顆蛋孵出的都是正常的小鴨,第四顆是全身藍綠色的小怪鴨,體型魁梧多了,還長了利牙,嘴裡不停咕嘰咕嘰叫,所以叫「Guji-Guji」。不管牠長得多怪,鴨媽媽都一樣愛牠。
有天,三隻長得和Guji-Guji很像的鱷魚從湖裡冒出來,嘲笑Guji-Guji:「看,這裡有一隻笨鱷魚,他在學美味可口的鴨子走路」。
Guji-Guji說自己是鴨,對方卻告訴牠「你只有綠藍綠藍的皮膚、尖尖的大爪子、銳利的牙齒和一身壞鱷魚的味道」,三隻鱷魚起邪念,誘惑Guji-Guji這個「同胞」,去獵殺牠三個鴨兄弟,吃頓美味大餐。牠真的會投入壞人陣營嗎?
信誼兒童文學獎得主陳致元的繪本「Guji-Guji」,主角是一隻另類的「醜小鴨」,圖畫生動、逗趣,讓這本書自2003年起風靡各國,英文版曾創下全美國上市3個月售出5萬5千本佳績,榮登紐約時報暢銷童書前十名。
本書情節發始於諾貝爾醫學獎得主勞倫斯的研究,他在動物學名著「所羅門王的指環」,提到鴨、鵝等許多卵生動物的新生兒破卵後,第一眼看到會動的東西,就視為媽媽,跟著對方走,稱為「銘印效應」。
Guji-Guji也不例外。牠雖是鱷魚,卻把母鴨當媽媽,從沒想過一口吃掉這個異族家庭。雖然遇到三隻壞鱷魚後,他曾迷惑、自我否定:「我不是鴨子,而是一隻壞鱷魚。」但最後肯定自己是獨一無二的「鱷魚鴨」,還設陷阱嚇走鱷魚,保住鴨媽媽一家人。
「愛可以化解任何隔閡差距,Guji-Guji的滑稽模樣讓人捧腹大笑、愛不釋手。」紐約時報書評推崇此書。這本書很適合國小新生看,尤其膚色、口音可能和班上同學不太一樣的原住民或外籍配偶子女,看了本書,可學會肯定自己的獨特性,用愛融化族群的誤解,欣賞和自己不同的人。

Guji Guji
Characters: Narrator1~4 (N1~N4), Guji Guji (G), Crocodile 1~3 (C1~3)
N1: An egg was rolling on the ground.
N2: It rolled through the trees.
N3: It rolled across the meadow.
N4: It rolled all the way down the hill.
N1: Finally, it rolled right into a duck’s nest.
N2: Mother Duck didn’t notice.
N3: Soon, the eggs began to crack.
N4: The first duckling had blue spots.
N1: Mother Duck named him Crayon.
N2: The second duckling had brown strips.
N3: “ Zebra,” Mother Duck said.
N4: The third duckling was yellow.
N1: Mother duck named him “ Moonlight.”
N2: Then, the fourth duckling cried,
G: Guji, Guji
N3: And that became his name.
N4: The ducklings learned swimming, diving, waddling.
G: They are so easy.
N1: Guji Guji learned more quickly than the others.
N2: He was bigger and stronger, too
N3: Shh… One terrible day, three crocodiles came.
N4: They looked a lot like Guji Guji.
N1: They saw Guji Guji and smiled with their mouths wide open.
N2: The whole world could see their big, pointed teeth.
C1: Look at that ridiculous crocodile.
C2: He’s walking like a duck.
N3: Guji Guji heard them.
G: I am not walking like a duck, I “am” a duck.
C1C2C3: Look at yourself.
C1: No feathers.
C2: No beak.
C3: No big webbed feet.
C1: But blue-gray skin.
C2: Sharp claws, pointed teeth.
C3: and the smell of bad crocodile.
C123: You’re just like us.
C1: Brother, we know you live with the ducks.
C2: Take them to the bridge tomorrow and practice diving.
C3: We’ll wait underneath with our mouths open wide.
G: Why should I listen to you?
C1: Because we are all crocodiles.
C23: Crocodiles help each other!
N4: Guji Guji felt terrible. He sat by the lake.
G: Is it true? Am I a bad crocodile too?
N1: He looked down into the lake and made a fierce face.
N2: Guji Guji laughed. He looked ridiculous.
G: I am not a bad crocodile. Of course I’m not exactly a duck either. But the three
nasty crocodiles want to eat my family. I have to think of a way to stop them.
N3: That night, the three bad crocodiles sharpened their pointed teeth. They were
ready for their feast.
N4: The next day, Guji Guji took the ducks to the bridge to practice diving.
C1: Hey, look!
C2: The stupid crocodile is coming.
C3: And also the yummy ducks.
C123: Let’s open our mouth widely…
G: Go! Brothers.
N3: Something’s falling down from the bridge.
N4: But it wasn’t fat, delicious ducks.
N1234: It was three big, hard rocks.
C1: Crack.
C2: Crack.
C3: Crack.
C123: Oh No.
N1: The three crocodiles ran as fast as they could.
N2: Guji Guji saved the ducks.
N3: He was the duck hero of the day.
N4: All the ducks danced and celebrated.
G: Hurray! Now I can continue live safely with my family.
N1: And Every day Guji Guji became a
N2: Stronger
N3: And happier
N1234: Crocoduck
G: Guji guji quack. Guji quack quack.
