Topics
Topics are one to two word titles for your body paragraphs. In creating them, you consider what you want to write about in your body paragraph and then give that paragraph a one word title. Therefore, if I want to write a paragraph in which I state that the election of Abraham Lincoln angered a lot of people enough to make them want to go to war, then I give this paragraph the topic title "politics". I do this, because I don't want a wordy thesis statement.
EXAMPLE:
Identify the causes of the Civil War.

purpose: The causes of the Civil War

Thesis= purpose + topics
The causes of the Civil War + politics, economic differences, and slavery.
The causes of the Civil War were politics, economic differences, and slavery.
