1871 book "The Railroad System of California: Oakland and Vicinity", State University, Etc. Two excellent maps, one of the state and one of Oakland area. It is the E.C. Sessions map
Where was this actually taking place?
Some of these pictures reference San Antonio Creek. In the mid 1800's San Antonio Creek drained what is now Lake Merritt. This map shows San Antonio Creek in 1857, about 10 years before these photos.
This map lets you drill down over a particular location in Oakland, Old Oakland
Here is a really helpful maps-over-time Oakland page.
I am again using this guide of Lawrence & Houseworth photos from cprr.org to select photos to post. The author says that the numbering may not be very accurate.
