Lawrence & Houseworth

These Alameda Canyon railroad photos were in Calisphere. There might be a container page somewhere which I haven't found. Calisphere has the whole collection of photos. The photos are stereo halves. Where is the second half?

The Society of California Pioneers provided the Lawrence & Houseworth Albums, a collection of almost 1500 images. They have a search page.

The Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum has a catalog of these Lawrence & Houseworth train photos which makes it easier to find what you want. There are many more images taken in Alameda County. I only linked to the ones in Alameda Canyon, so far.

The Society of California Pioneers recommends these two books on Lawrence & Houseworth:

169. Exterior of Lawrence & Houseworth's Store, 317 and 319 Montgomery street, San Francisco.

A close up of their window shows better the little pub below their shop and some pictures.

168. Fractured Plate-Glass Window, in Lawrence & Houseworth's Store, caused by the Nitro-Glycerine Explosion, April 16th, 1866.

What nitro-glycerine explosion? It was a Wells Fargo office.

Read about it in the April 17th, 1866, Daily Alta California.

This close up of their window shows better the little pub below their shop and some pictures.

9 Montgomery Street.

This book shows stereoscopic photos of railroad scenes. However, none of the photos are of Alameda Canyon.

The book explains that Lawrence & Houseworth advertised to buy negatives of "every place of interest on the Pacific Coast...". They sold some photos of Alfred A. Hart. Perhaps, the Alameda Canyon photos are taken by Mr. Hart?

Here's a snippet of an advertisement in the Sacramento Daily Union, May 7, 1864.
