Dr. John Newton
Dr. John Newton recently retired from public school teaching to follow his dream of over 35 years to provide a healthy, humanistic learning environment. He has a Bachelor of Science in Human Development from St. Lawrence University, a Masters of Science in Early Childhood from SUNY-Cortland, and a Doctorate in Elementary Education from Temple University. He is currently an adjunct instructor for SUNY-Fredonia in the Curriculum and Instruction Department. Dr. John was the New York State recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship for 1997-1998. This allowed him to be the East Aurora School naturalist for a sabbatical year. Always innovative, his work with students has included one of the first internet projects, an AT&T Learning Circle in the 1980s featured around the world; an environmental project on zebra mussels that resulted in a United Nations presentation and a spot on Japanese television; the creation of the Great Lakes Student Summit, student presentations to the International Joint Commission as well as the Canadian ambassador; and the student-created Friends of Emery Park. Bob Kennedy President
Bob is a science teacher at Heuvelton Central School. This year marks his 25th year as an educator. He has taught science to students from third grade to AP Biology. He has invested his life in the education of students both in and out of the classroom. Bob is the adviser for Chess Club, Guitar Club, the Seaway Valley Screamin' Eagles Rocket Club, as well as a boy scout merit badge counselor. He has a special interest in the Odyssey Academy as he will have three children attending. Dr. Jim ShumanDr. Jim Shuman serves as Coordinator of the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program and as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in General Studies in Education. His resume covers a 40-year career in education, including high school teaching, working as a museum educator, and teaching in colleges and universities. He came to St. Lawrence in 1989. He received M. S. and Ed. D. degrees from West Virginia University and a B. Don is currently working with school districts across New York state as an educational consultant and a staff developer. Along with co-author Pat Flynn, he founded The Institute for Learning Centered Education and its annual Summer Constructivist Design Conference, which focus on Constructivist theory and its practical classroom application, since 1995. The father of 3, Don lives in northern New York state with his wife, Susan, where he teaches in the education department at St. Lawrence University.
