Spitfire!

As Airfix released its superlative late Spitfires, it struck me that I'd built quite a few Spits in my time, each of different mark and I wondered if I could build 'em all.

Whilst I'm nowhere near as fanatical about Mitchell's masterpiece as many, I do appreciate a good story of aviation development and the evolution of the Spit, from the Mk.1 to the Mk.24, is a great example of aeronautical progression.

Given that there's a Mk.24 Spitfire, I'd assumed that there would be at least 24 different models of Spitfire to build. I say "at least", because I'm also aware of, for example, there being a Vb and a Vc. Further thinking and I remembered low flight (level) and high flight (level) versions of the aircraft.

However, when I started to look around, back when I began this Project, it seems that the Mk.III and Mk.IV didn't really happen, as such...according to Wikipedia, at least. Likewise, kits were few and far between of these lesser-known marks.

In 1/72, Airfix has made a fair stab at major variants of the Spitfire, with Mk.I, Mk.II, Mk.Vb and Vc, Mk.IX, PRXIX and Mk.22 covered.

Heller has the Mk.16 and I know Italeri have a few more within their back catalogue.

Then there are Seafires, Seafangs and Spitefuls to consider...

Airfix 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1, Flight Officer JC Mungo-Park, 74 Squadron, RAF Hornchurch, May 1939

This particular aircraft was delivered brand new to the Squadron and was later flown by Pilot Officer Szezesny, who damaged the aircraft in a forced landing on 13th August, 1940. The aircraft then served with 57 OTU. It was then converted to a Mk.Va, serving with 53OTU, before acting as Air Service Trainer for 303 and then 81 Squadron. It then spent some time with Shorts, before returning to 51OTU and 53 OTU, with whom it crashed, sustaining serious damage. It was then struck off charge, although, interestingly, it was recategorised and transferred to 39 Maintenance Unit, before being finally struck off charge on 15th October, 1945.

This aircraft, K9867, is the same as that shown in its earlier guise, in February of the same year.

Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IIa, Pilot Officer John Freeborn, 74 Squadron, "Black Varieties", RAF Gravesend, May, 1941.

This Spitfire was delivered to the Tigers from No.6 Maintenance Unit.

Sadly, this particular aircraft was one of a pair which mistakenly engaged a pair of 56 Squadron Hurricanes, having been directed to do so by ground control. As a consequence, Pilot Officer M L Halton-Harrop was killed and the incident referred to as the Battle of Barking Creek. The aircraft itself later served with 152 Squadron, then 12 and 58 Operational Training Units, being involved in a relatively minor flying accident with the latter. Following this, the aircraft served with 1690 Flight, helping to train bomber crews for fighter defence. This aircraft was finally written off in December 1944.
