We are a country of about 4.5 million people, made up of lots of different cultures, on a landmass of about 270 square kilometres - that's a bit larger than the UK and a bit smaller than Norway. New Zealand lies in the Southwestern part of the Pacific, just to the east of Australia. The Maori people began arriving about 800 years ago and most other cultures began arriving around 250 years ago. Our national icon is the Kiwi which is why we call ourselves 'Kiwi's. We're pretty lucky in many ways, as a people and a country. We're inventive and creative - you can thank New Zealand for jet boats, snow-landing planes, bungy jumping, eggbeaters, zorbing, refriderated shipping, tranquiliser guns and springfree trampolines! In New Zealand you can visit a sunny beach, go lake fishing and then go skiing on a beautiful mountain, all in the same morning. We also have some pretty unique flora and fauna.....many that can be found nowhere else in the world.
