Wrestling or fighting is part and parcel of life. We talk of a patient fighting cancer, a boatman fighting the current, a fireman fighting a fire, a scholar fighting for a scholarship and so on. To bring people home to God, the Church also has to wrestle with evil in the world and in ourselves. The followers of Jesus carry on the same fight as Jesus had.
The Spirit, like a mighty wind 'drove' Jesus into the desert where he fought Satan the tempter. Having proven to be the 'stronger' Jesus came back into town and set people free from the power of Satan. Whether it was casting out demons in the synagogue or throwing the money-changers out of the temple, right from the beginning Jesus carried the fight to the enemy.
The Spirit at Pentecost did not enthuse the first disciples; they were already very excited since they had seen Jesus ascending into heaven. Before he went, Jesus told them to wait. He knew that their natural enthusiasm would run out when they confronted the forces aligned against them. He was not going to send them out to bring humanity back to God until they had received the 'power from on high'.
The Church has the same opponents as Jesus had, namely, Satan and his agents. The symbol of the pyramid, found on the American dollar bill, identifies the enemy and his strategy in our time.
The 'Eye of Horus' represents the spirit opposed to God, namely, Satan.
The detached top of the pyramid represents the ruling elite.
The radiant light represents their spiritual enlightenment
The lower levels of the pyramid represent the lower levels of humanity to whom the elite delegate degrees of power down to the poor at the bottom of the pyramid who get no power.
Placed on the dollar bill, this pyramid shows the connection between political power and mammon. Like any fight we have a choice, serve God or mammon. We can't fight for both sides. (See Mt 6:24)
In the power of the Spirit (See Lk 4:18) Jesus turned the pyramid on its head, placing the poor are at the top (See Lk 6:20-26) and the greatest at the bottom (See Mt 20:25-28) in God's household. (See also 1 Cor 12:22-26)
So, who are the most vulnerable in today's society? They are the Unborn. Pro-life action flips the values of the-powers-that-be, just like Jesus did when he taught the Beatitudes. The litmus test, for whose side is a person on, is to ask yourself, 'Would they permit abortion to preserve a life-style?'
Bringing people home to God means flipping the values of this world.
