Think of functions as machines. You put something (a number) into the machine, and it spits something else (a different number) back out. In Example 1, think of the numbers from the "Place" category as the things we put into the function, and the numbers from the "Tokens" category as the things we got out. So, when we input a 1 into the function (to represent first place), the function machine spits out a 10 (to represent the associated number of tokens you get for first place).
