Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I find an abandoned kitten?
If the kitten appears to be less than 8 weeks old, weighs less than one pound, its eyes and ears are still closed, or its eyes are blue, contact us at thefosterkittenproject@gmail.com or text 402-651-8507 for immediate assistance. If the kitten you found does not meet this criteria, please contact your local shelter or humane society.
Do you take in all cats and kittens?
No, we specialize in orphaned and abandoned neonatal kittens. In some cases, we will take in nursing or pregnant cats.
We always take back kitten(s)/cat(s) that have been adopted from The Foster Kitten Project. It is in our contract that they must be returned to us if they are to be rehomed.
If the animals you have do not meet our criteria for surrender, we suggest you contact other local rescues and shelters that can be found on Share Omaha.
If you still need help, we want to provide pets with the best furever homes and recommend you use a safe rehoming service such as adopt-a-pet.com.
Can you help care for the kittens I have?
We, unfortunately, do not have the resources to provide veterinary care or advice. In some cases, we will take in kittens if the family cannot care for them. In these situations, the kittens will be surrendered to The Foster Kitten Project and put up for adoption when it is appropriate.
Do you offer financial assistance?
We, unfortunately, do not have the resources to provide to the public, but we want to help your family stay together. We know that having a pet isn’t always easy, but here are resources that can help you at adopt-a-pet.com.
How much does it cost to adopt a kitten?
Most kittens cost $175 to adopt.
How long does the adoption process take?
Please allow 7-10 days for us to process and approve your application. Once approved, you can take your kitten home within a few days. Sometimes there is a longer waiting period depending on the age of the kitten.
What are your business hours?
We do not have business hours; we are a home-based and foster care volunteer organization. Please contact us, and we will reply as soon as possible.
Are you a non-profit?
Yes, we have 501(c)3 status. Our EIN number is 82-2765167.
Do you euthanize animals?
Our shelter is committed to saving every animal in our care who can be saved. We do not end the life of healthy or treatable pets even at an owner’s request. We only euthanize a pet if:
A veterinarian or trained medical staff under guidelines set by a veterinarian has deemed the prognosis to be poor or grave,
there is no chance of recovering an acceptable quality of life, or
It would be clearly inhumane or unsafe not to do so immediately.
