Theatre is steeped in tradition. Some etiquette behaviors make common sense. Some have historical reference. You should learn and practice these behavioral patters. It is part of the rich tradition of live theatre. Please pass on the tradition.
General:
- Never mention the Scottish play in the theatre. If you don't know what the Scottish play is, ask someone.
Stage Managers
- Always say 'please' and 'thank you'.
- Your company is always referred to as 'ladies and gentlemen', no you guys, hey, or anything else.
- Always been done with your notes by the 15 minute call.
- Never eat at your desk nor in front of the company.
Actors
- Always be on time.
- When learning your show learn to call for 'line' rather than stare in to space. We may think your acting.
- When your call is announced always say, 'thank you.'
Backstage
- Never handle another persons props.
- Don't sit on the Props.
- Actors, return all props to the prop table.
- Never point a gun (loaded or not) at anyone. Aim it either up or downstage of them.
- Never whistle backstage.
Dressing Rooms:
- Always answer with "thank you" to a stage managers call.
- Be quiet. Prepare yourself for the evening.
- Don't invite people into group dressing rooms without first asking the others. Better yet, just don't invite them.
- Never smoke, eat, or drink in costume. Hang it up. Bring a robe from home. If you must eat, drink, or smoke - put on the robe.
Head Sets:
- Be careful what you say on a headset, you never know who will be listening.
- When in warning there is no chatter on the headset.
- When you pick up or put down your headset make sure the microphone is off.
