What does I18N/L10N stand for?

For I18N, they took the first letter in the word Internationalization "I" and the last letter "N". Then the number of letters in-between the 'I' and the 'N' was counted. The number was 18. So, I18N stands for I(18 letters)N.

The same thing was done for L10N, Localization. L(10 letters)N.

What is the difference between Localization and Internationalization?

"Internationalization is the process of planning and implementing products and services so that they can be easily adapted to specific local languages and cultures, a process called localization. The internationalization process is sometimes called translation or localization enablement." (www.whatis.com)

"Localization is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired locale 'look-and-feel'... In localizing a product, in addition to idiomatic language translation, such details as time zones, money, national holidays, locale color sensitivities, product or service names, gender roles and geographic examples must all be considered. A successfully localized service or product is one that appears to have been developed within the locale culture." (www.whatis.com)

What exactly is Pseudo Localization?

Pseudo Localization is the process of taking the English string files (Message Catalogs, *.rc files, and properties files) and inserting non-English characters before and after each of the strings. These altered string files are then used to build a localized version of the product.

These are the three main benefits to using Pseudo Localization methods:

  1. These files can be generated when the English files are ready, instead of having to wait until the full translation is completed. Testing can occur at an earlier time.

  2. English appears on each button, menu option, etc., so anyone who speaks English can test this Localized version of the build.

  3. You can test the processing and appearance of these non-English characters in this build long before the fully translated files are available.
