Buck McWhorter

On March 21, 1947, Buck McWhorter, was born into an imaginative yet hard working family.  Parents, Ann and Emmett McWhorter, lived on a farm located in the Steadman community just north of the city of Tallapoosa.

Like most young boys, Buck admired his dad.  He was captivated by the stories his father would   relate as he sat on his dad’s lap.  But, what really caught Buck’s attention were the drawings of rabbits.  Emmett’s favorite subject matter, a mother rabbit and her bunnies, were typically drawn on his art paper of choice Blue Horse or Write/Right Notebook Paper.

Inspired by his daddy’s stories and drawing skills, Buck began to draw as well.  Consequently, the natural pencil artist in Buck McWhorter began to emerge.

In addition to drawing as a youngster, Buck was also inspired by a family of musicians.  At the age of five years, he began singing publicly.  His older brother is the popular singer and songwriter, Harold McWhorter.  For over 50 years, the younger McWhorter traveled throughout the Southeast performing solo as well as with his brother.

At the age of 58, the multi-talented pencil artist and singer suffered a stroke.  This unfortunate event left him devoid of a singing voice and a body that was partially paralyzed on the right side.  However, with much hard work, determination and support from friends and loved ones, Buck regained most of his motor skills with the aid of physical therapy.

No longer able to sing professionally, he decided to revisit his love of drawing.  For more than twenty-five years, Buck had not utilized his talent for sketching.  Today he is drawing those beautiful nature scenes and quaint structures that he recalls as a child growing up on the farm.

With every drawing, he is able to capture the essence of an object or scene.  His portrait pencil drawings include well known actors and singers of days gone by.  From time to time, he is commissioned to replicate the image of one’s beloved pet.

In the year 2012, the Dogwood City Art Gallery of Tallapoosa featured Buck as one of the city’s beloved artists.

Sadly Buck passed on December 7th 2017 but he continues to please art lovers throughout the country with his thoughtfully produced drawings.
