Join Swimpedia as we review screeners of the first two episodes of The Eric Andre Show Season 6 with minimal spoilers, and find out if Eric Andre’s still got it!

[MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

Eric Andre is someone who needs little to no introduction, having crafted a comedic style and brand that is truly his own. Since Season 5, his recent work has included everything from writing, producing, and starring in Netflix’s Bad Trip (2021) to playing the character of Lyle Lisson in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones Season 2 (2022). Now, nearly three years since the premiere of The Eric Andre Show Season 5 (2020), he’s come back to Adult Swim with Season 6 despite originally planning to end the series off on Season 5. Interestingly, since the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc. last year, the landscape of Warner Bros. Discovery properties has changed significantly, leaving The Eric Andre Show as the only current live action Adult Swim program. This speaks greatly to the power, creativity, and popularity of Eric Andre, to still be coming in hot to a channel that appears to be pivoting to a greater animation focus. Tune into The Eric Andre Show Season 6 tonight at midnight if you want to find out for yourself why Adult Swim has so much confidence in Eric Andre!

Ahead of tonight’s two episode premiere, marketing has labeled this season of The Eric Andre Show as “sexy Season 6.” This is most evident in Eric Andre himself, who lost 40 pounds and got ripped to play his character this season. Additionally, the set itself has shifted from the gold pageantry, which was described as “Liberace's Las Vegas mansion,” of last season to a more sensual purple and pink satin vibe this time around. This may even be why the logo on the back of the set has gone from its typical rectangular look to a more oval, curvy aesthetic. On top of that, there may also be a retro atmosphere as well, including the new big shag chair and rock salt lamp on the desk. That all being said, in typical Eric Andre fashion, despite the set change, the core of the show remains the same, with set destruction, off the wall cast members, unsuspecting interviews, and wild on the street pranks.

In terms of on-set characters, the first major change is Season 5’s all-Japanese house band is out, being replaced by a now all-male West African group. These musicians are ready to give Eric Andre a run for his money, pulling as many strange and unpredictable antics as him. Similarly, the show’s in-universe crew also gets in on the fun, helping to mess with nearly every guest in the first two episodes. This includes potentially my favorite stage manager to date, particularly because of her potential connection to Eric Andre in the show. Then, of course, Felipe Esparza continues his role as guest co-host from last season after the departure of Hannibal Buress. Although he does have great rapport with Eric Andre already, because he won’t be the permanent replacement, it does sometimes feel like they aren’t fully committed to using him to the best of his potential. However, he still manages some fun lines, even if his style is more in agreement with Eric Andre compared to Hannibal’s more contrarian approach.

Turning to the interviews and sketches, together they still provide such entertainment that makes the show feel like it flies by. One notable guest, already featured in a preview for the season, is Lil Nas X, who plays a prominent role in the first episode. With the show’s increased fanbase, one is always left wondering how much do guests like him actually know about the show beforehand. This is most notable in their reactions, where most still have no idea what Eric Andre’s character will actually do, but they’re still expecting crazy nonsense because they’ve seen the show. Thus, even though interviews are still incredibly engaging and surprising thanks to the tricks being played on guests, some guests simply end up reacting and playing off Eric Andre in different, better ways. That being said, the flip side of this is that Eric Andre continues to get even bigger personalities on the show, which is fascinating to see on Adult Swim, especially after earlier seasons featured “fake” major celebrities.

Nevertheless, where the show is still as fresh as ever is Eric Andre’s on the street pranks. Not only is it clear that he hasn’t run out of ideas, arguably some of his ideas are better than ever, but there’s very much seemingly authentic reactions that add to the magic. It also just seems like Eric Andre continues to get bolder and crazier with these segments. The viewer is left wondering what won’t he do, how far will he go, how has he not gotten in major trouble, and how does the legal department continue to approve of these amazing sketches. Ultimately, the most laughs are likely to come from these segments, even if interviews and on-set high jinks continue to be compelling and humorous. The pranks are definitely what will keep you coming back the most again and again, no matter if you’re a long time fan or new to all of this.

By and large, after five seasons, the premiere of The Eric Andre Show Season 6 still manages to capture the recipe that has made past seasons so enjoyable. At the center is Eric Andre, who is a master at keeping everyone on their toes, unsure of what's coming next. Even if Season 6 follows the similar beats of recent seasons, one can’t help but still be glued to the show. The series still works, combining the right amount of expected elements with new ideas that will keep you coming back for more, and help each episode somehow feel even less than the 11 minutes provided. Moreover, it’s the real world pranks, such as the EMT sketch from the second episode featured in a preview back in March, that may be even more hilarious than in the past. However, you’ll have the opportunity to check out for yourself whether Season 6 sticks the landing for you tonight at midnight!
