Want to be a Safe Routes Champion?

The Lawrence Pedestrian Coalition is looking for three volunteers for Sunset Hill Elementary.

Being active keeps kids healthy, and walking or biking to schools is an excellent way to get in the habit of being active. The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department has been leading the way to promote active lives for kids with its “Be Active Safe Routes” program. Be Active Safe Routes is a comprehensive approach to make neighborhoods safe and accessible for everyone. In addition to improving safety, Be Active Safe Routes benefits communities by reducing traffic congestion and air pollution, increasing the opportunity to be physically active and building community cohesion.

During the last two years, campaigns such as the “Travel with Care Campaign” and the “Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training (BLAST)” program were created to enhance Be Active Safe Routes. The next step in this effort is to create a cadre of community volunteers known as “Safe Routes Champions” to work with schools, neighborhood groups, the Health Dept., and others to promote and coordinate the Safe Routes program and other efforts to encourage active lives for all community members. I am contacting you today on behalf of the Lawrence Pedestrian Coalition to ask if you might be interested, or know someone who might be interested is serving as an SRTS Champion for Sunset Hill Elementary.

Champions would participate in a one-day training workshop on August 29, which would prepare them for their work championing Safe Routes. We would like to recruit three Champions from Sunset Hill. Champions could include school staff, teachers, parents, neighborhood leaders, or any interested resident. Can you help me? If so, email me at gwebber@sunflower.com, or phone me at 785-312-4840.

Thanks,

Gary Webber
