On Sunday February 9th we will do an 8 mile circular walk from Hadfield. After crossing the valley over into Tintwistle, we will ascend some 300ft through lovely woodland up to Lad’s Leap, which offer fantastic views of the reservoirs down below. Returning to Hadfield, the last 3 miles are a gentle decline along the reservoirs via the Pennine Way and Longdendale trail. There should be time for a pint at the Spinners Arms in Hadfield before we take the train home.
We will get to Hadfield by train - meet at Manchester Piccadilly (information board) at 10:00 to catch the 10:18 train to Hadfield.
We expect to return to Manchester for 18:12 on the 17:31 from Hadfield, although depending on the length of the pub stop we may want to take an earlier or later train- they run every 30 minutes.
On Sunday March 16th we will be taking a 10mile walk right over the historically interesting Winter Hill in the West Pennines Moors, from Adlington on the western side (via Rivington Reservoir and Lever Park) then down to Entwistle on the east (via the Turton and Entwistle Reservoir).
Winter Hill is reputed to provide views of the Peak District, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Snowdonia, and I do look forward to testing that.
There will be time for a pub stop (optionally including a late lunch) at the lovely Strawbury Duck pub at Entwistle.
We will get to Adlington (Lancashire) by train. Meet outside the Cornerhouse at Manchester Oxford Road Station at 10:10 to catch the 10:24 train to Adlington. Only single tickets required.
We expect to return to Manchester for 17:50 on the 17:17 train from Entwistle, although depending on the length of the pub stop we may want to take an earlier train as they run every hour.
The pub is right next to the Entwistle train station so it will be easy to be flexible.
Join us for a trip to Mold and a hike up the Clwydian Range. This walk is a little shorter than usual but includes a few steep bits to get onto the ridge. We will do a circular walk of ca 8 miles and take in part of Offa’s Dyke path to enjoy the views from Moel Famau. The ruins of the Jubilee tower have been restored last year (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-east-wales-24383595 ) so all the more reason to go!
The walk will of course include a pub stop.
We will leave BY CAR at 9:00 AM from the forecourt of Oxford Road train station in the city centre, so please arrive there no later than ca. 8:50. To make sure you can all get home in time to watch the World Cup final, we aim to get back to Manchester no later than 6:00pm.
To plan the number the number of cars we need, please get in touch BY FRIDAY to let us know a) if you will come along and b) if you have a car and are happy to take people with you, if need be. We currently have two cars but if we have a crowd we’ll clearly need more drivers.
Our outing on Sunday October 19th will be an 8 mile walk from Burnley to Crawshawbooth via the lovely Towneley Hall and Park onto the Burnley Way, Pennine and Rossendale Way, and past the dramatic Easden Clough.
Most of the route is relatively flat except for two or three short-ish and steep sections in the middle of the route.
Having made it to Crawshawbooth, there are several pub options- the Black Dog and Mason’s arms just a hop away from the bus stop, and the White Bull (serving Real Ales on the ground floor and Indian food upstairs) a little further up the road.
We will get to Burnley by bus (!). Meet at 9:45am at Chorlton Street central bus station, stop EZ, to catch the X43 bus (“The Witch Way”) leaving for Nelson at 10:00am. (The bus goes via Albert Square, Deansgate- Barton Arcade, Strangeways, Higher Broughton and Prestwich in case you live near that route and want to join there.)
For the way back we should easily be able to make the 4:27 or 4:57 from Crawshawbooth, which will take about one hour to get back to Manchester city centre.
As we are going by bus you can just turn up on the day. However if you are planning to come it is helpful to have a mobile number to text you on if there are any last-minute changes.
This route is not excessively rough but obviously there may be boggy areas after rainfall, so good footware is essential.
