Story is king, whether its a commercial or video , animation, game, children's book.
As humans we respond well to stories. That is why we enjoy them for entertainment and use them for education, as well as advertising. I always start with storyboards it is the quickest and cheapest way to get to a great result if it works in the boards it will work in the final edit.
Modern creation tools and publishing platforms offer more opportunity to tell unique stories efficiently.

I wanted to a cartoony self portrait, highlighting my classical sculpture training. using the scan of the sculpture I made in class back in 1991. rendered in unreal engine. The cat is from the Tronder Red movie, the cup is from my first day lesson on modeling. the wood man I made for my animation class, the stand I made in my wood shop so I can at some point get back to sculpting.
Maya, Mudbox, I was asked to recreate the advertising art for the restoration of this Freia truck from 1913. There are only three historic photos to study and only showing the larger shapes so I drew out the lager forms and had to then work out what the mid level detail would be and then I took the models into Autodesk Mudbox to put in the fine feather detail, because the bird is at a height people would want to touch it.

I built the high detailed heart using displacemet maps painted in photoshop to get the detail, then converted to normal maps for Unity. Here I wanted to show different ways to display the heart from X-ray to cut away or a more illustrative cross hatch shader.

Watercolor, india ink, photoshop, microsoft word, I have always loved the medium of picture books and really enjoyed my course in Children's book illustration. I like having a frame around the illustration it is then a rule I can break to give a dinaomism and enrgey to the image. I also like adding little elemnts that animated from page to page, that wont be noticed till the forth or fifth reading.
Maya, Photoshop, Unity. Fun job, porting the Wii game to the Nintendo DS. The poly counts were very low and it was a challenge to capture the charm of the original games with limited resources, but Dino did an amazing job leveraging the DS unique lay out to make the gameplay fun and tactile. I had to support 12 characters and developed export scripts for each to automate the process.

Portrait sculpture class in 1991, Tuesday nights we had 3 hours to get a likeness of the model, but on Thursday we had the same model for the whole semester, we were graded on the likeness, then cast the sculpture in plaster, and later I added a bronze patina, it was displayed in a show at the Boston Athenæum.
When Autodesk released the recap, scanning app it was the obiuse item in the house to test on. and to test the 3d printer at work, and when I needed to teach retopology it was the obiuse case study to practice on.
Maya, substance Painter, Unity, for Magic Leap AR. I was asked to refactor the High Poly scans of the hipsergry training tool and make them compatible with Unity for display in the magic leap AR head set.

Danny Bear, the star bear and of the 12 bears he was the only one with dynamic fur. Each bear had their own light rig that was tweeaked to show them off to the best ablity. I was teaching in the masters program at the time and put my prgress into the weekly critiques with my students.

The client needed to show their pod technology in action, with animation I could put the camera in impossible places that showed the technology to its best effect, I built a normal foot rig then each pod got its own rigging controls.
Oil Paint , Canvas board. I photograph the cars at a carshow, I changed the background to give a bit more ideal setting, I worked on it every night for two weeks when I got home from my day job.

All animators want to make a classic 1950s animated short, this is mine. Karls rig is a full super toon rig, with rubber hose limbs and muliple out fits.
