Geography 3224 provides a detailed study on the geography of Appalachia – its physical environment and relationships with cultural history, human settlement, and landscape change. We will focus mainly on the cognitive core of central and southern Appalachia, first with in-depth study of the region’s physical geography, then a detailed look at human geography and how it is shaped by the environment (and vice versa). At a minimum, you will leave the course with a better understanding and appreciation of the local area we live in and the diversity of people, history, and landscapes around you.
