The Scottish Student Forensic Research Symposium (SSFRS) was founded in 2014 as a student-led research symposium designed to showcase the current research in forensic disciplines being undertaken across Scotland. It combines guest speakers from both academia and the field with student oral presentations and poster displays to create an exciting, interactive environment for attendees. This is a great opportunity to foster collaborations between future forensic science professionals and increase awareness of the breadth and depth of the subject area.
Thank you to everyone who attended the 5th SSFR Symposium hosted by the University of Dundee on 6th November 2019. This was a student-led event and was organised by PhD students from the University of Dundee. It provided an excellent opportunity for networking between Scottish forensic science students and experts and foster collaborations between future forensic science professionals. It was a day full of oral and poster presentations showcasing the current research in forensic science disciplines being undertaken across Scotland. Thank you to the judges of our oral presentations, Dr. Penny Haddrill, Dr. Calum Morrison, and Dr. Alex Gray. Check out the winners below.

Stuart Ramage (First Oral Presentation), Lysbeth Antonides (Second Oral Presentation), Andrew Brandon (Third Oral Presentation sponsored by Chiron), Caitlyn Norman (First Poster Presentation), and Doha Abualhija (Second Poster Presentation).
Thank you to our Keynote Speakers, Professor Lorna Dawson who discussed the origins of soil science back to the Romans and the current uses of forensic geoscience evidence, and Mr. Neil Coupar, who discussed how a career in the field of forensic science can be gratifying and that students should "be inquisitive" and "enjoy the journey."
Also a big thank you to all of our discussion group leaders, Dr. Alexander Gray, Dr. Craig McKenzie, Mr. Roy Mudie, Dr. Peter Maskell, Mr. Neil Coupar, and Professor Lorna Dawson who led interesting about topics important to the field of forensic science, including "How do you effectively communicate science to a lay jury?" and "How can forensic science research best support practitioners working in the field?"
